Montmartre is considered one of the most mythical and romantic districts in Paris (and perhaps the world), despite its out-of-the-way location. Its charm is preserved thanks to the winding stone alleys and the bohemian life that developed there during the 19th and 20th centuries.
On this page you will find all the information you need to build a fascinating trip to the place, a trip that will leave you wanting more. I have compiled unique itineraries for you, information on must-see attractions, accommodation recommendations, and juicy pieces of history.

Montmartre Map
Want to get your bearings? Here's a map of the area to help you plan your route:
Important tourist information
In which district is Montmartre located?
The Montmartre district is located in the 18th arrondissement of ParisThese are the boundaries of his sector:
- in the north: Caulaincourt Street.
- In the East: La Goutte d'Or neighborhood (an area with quite a few immigrants and therefore less sympathetic to the Israeli tourist).
- In the West: Clichy Square (a place with quite a few nice restaurants, including the legendary brasserie Wepler).
- In the south: Basically the border runs along Boulevard Clichy, but I would take it down to Rue de Châteaudun where the Notre Dame de Lorette church is located. This way you can enjoy the Saint Georges neighborhood and even the Nouvelle Athenes neighborhoods.
How many days should you dedicate to Montmartre?
If you only want to visit the hill itself, then half a day will be enough for you. However, if you want to combine the visit to the hill with a visit to the southern neighborhoods and perhaps also to the cemetery of MontmartreSo I would recommend you spend a whole day in the area.
How to get to Montmartre?
Metro
- Line 12: This is the only line that goes straight to the heart of Montmartre (Abbesses and Lamarck – Caulaincourt stations). To start a trip from the south, you can get off at Notre-Dame-de-Lorette.
- Line 2: Pigalle and Blanche stations (near the Moulin Rouge).
- Line 13: Place de Clichy station.
Bus and cable car
- bus: Line 40 climbs the hill to Skara Ker.
- Cable car (Funiculaire): Goes from Place Louise Michel to Sécurité (for the price of a regular metro ticket).
Why is it worth visiting Montmartre?
Although the district is no longer as bohemian and “biting” as it once was, it provides a great mix of rustic architecture, fascinating history, culinary delights, and legendary nightclubs. All of these, combined with the view from the Saqqara Square, are a great reason to visit.
Is Montmartre safe for tourists?
The tourist area of Montmartre (between the Moulin Rouge and Rue Caulaincourt) is completely safe. On the other hand, the eastern part of the 18th arrondissement (La Goutte d'Or neighborhood) and parts of the northern part are less pleasant and I would not recommend tourists to walk around there, especially at night.
In my opinion, there is no better way to start planning a trip to a particular district than to learn its history. This is especially true in Montmartre, where modern art was born. I highly recommend you read the article on The history of Montmartre Before the visit.
