At first glance, you might think that there are a lot of hotels in Paris, but in reality, this is not the case, as there are about 100,000 hotel rooms in all of Paris, which are supposed to serve about 35 million tourists a year. This is why the city of Paris is working hard to add more hotels, with the plan to add about 7,000 more hotel rooms by 2020.

Some hotels are opening in areas slightly away from the center or in office areas where there were almost no hotels in the past. The location in these areas, which are cheaper than the center, allows for a high level of service at relatively low prices, and such hotels will likely become a hit among companies that send their employees to meet with clients whose offices are nearby. An example of this is Hotel Curio, a “low cost” hotel from Hilton, which recently opened in the 14th arrondissement of Paris.

Recently renovated hotels in Paris

At the same time, many hotels in Paris are undergoing a wave of renewal and renovations, which not only adds more rooms but also upgrades the experience of staying there. Here are some examples of what is happening in the Paris hotel scene this year:

Hotel Lutetia

Paris undoubtedly has a fine selection of luxury hotels, but Lutetia, located in the bohemian neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, stands out for being a rare luxury hotel on the left bank of the Seine and also for its unique history, which can be read about in Pierre Assouline's book "Lutetia."

After more than four years of renovation, the hotel is expected to reopen in June 2018, almost 108 years since its founding. It returns with a contemporary design, without losing the Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture that once distinguished it.

The transformation of the five-star hotel with 184 rooms and suites is, as is well known, the responsibility of Israelis – the Akirov family of hoteliers. Georgi Akirov, Alfred’s son, is the chairman of THE SET hotel company, which includes the Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam, the Café Royal Hotel in London and now the Lutetia in Paris. The company purchased the hotel from the Starwood chain in 2010 and, as Akirov told the New York Times, “The hotel has been in operation for almost a century and has never undergone an internal renovation. We wanted to preserve the past, while adapting it to the modern traveler.”

The hotel features a courtyard filled with natural light, a spacious spa and pool, and its popular brasserie will open in September under the direction of three-Michelin-starred Gerald Passedat.

  1. I chose the Queen's Pavilion.
But unfortunately it will be a while before I get close to an airport, but at least it's a pleasure to browse and see the diverse offerings.
