Dozens of visits to France have made me a person who is really not easy to impress. I have seen dozens of castles, towns and cities, so to make me say “Wow!”, I need something completely different. And that is exactly what I got when I walked through the Verdon Canyon in November 2019.
Verdon Canyon is located in the southeast France In the French Alps, the canyon is 25 kilometers long and up to 700 meters deep, with a turquoise river flowing through it that flows into Lake Sainte Croix. But all these “technical” details don’t begin to explain the sense of awe I felt when I got there and saw the large lake or the deep gorges.
The wild beauty of the canyon is simply stunning and even city dwellers like me, who usually prefer palaces and cathedrals, cannot remain indifferent to it. And speaking of civilization, you will also find it in the form of farms offering wonderful jams, cute little villages and ancient towns such as Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
Since there is so much to see and do in and around Verdon Canyon, I highly recommend finding a hotel or apartment and using it as a base for stargazing in the area. Here are my recommendations.

Hotel & Spa in the Gorges du Verdon

La Bastide du Calalou
A rural nobleman's mansion that has been turned into a stunning hotel in a huge, quiet garden, about a half-hour drive from the mall. Outdoor pool, tennis courts, and even a helipad! Includes a restaurant serving lunch and dinner. Close to the truffle market.
3-star hotels and camping in Verdon Canyon
Camping La Ferme de Castellane
For families who love nature: Camping in a forest not far from the canyon, offering charming and equipped wooden cabins. The complex has picnic tables and a river that runs through the area. Parking adjacent to the cabin – a huge advantage with children.
Hotel Le Moulin du Chateau
An old country estate that has been converted into a family hotel amidst lavender fields, olive trees and an old wine press. The food is organic and fresh and comes from the surrounding villages. The hotel is part of the Green Hotel Charter and protects the environment.
The Relais Notre-Dame
About 300 meters from Verdon Mall, in a rural estate. Small family hotel with a swimming pool, a huge garden and a restaurant serving excellent local food and a wine bar. The location allows for a walk to the local market and the prehistoric museum.
Domain of Majastre
A 3-star hotel that is worth much more. Set in an ancient mansion with a heated outdoor pool and a huge garden for children. Meals are based on local products, including truffles on request. Stunning views.
Recommended villas and apartments in Verdon Mall
Jasmine
I stayed in this house during my stay at the Verdon Canyon and I highly recommend it. Located in the town of Montagnac, a short drive from the canyon and Moustiers Sainte Marie. Comfortable rooms, good breakfast, excellent service and a very reasonable price.
The House of Moustiers
Stunning villa in the village, spread over 4 floors on a tiny street with an ancient fountain. About 5 km from Lake St. Croix. Suitable for 4 guests with a fully equipped kitchen and garden with barbecue. Very kind hosts.
L'Escalo
Ideal villa for several families. 4 bedrooms (each with a shower and toilet!), Living room and balcony with amazing views. Large kitchen, barbecue and spacious dining room. Close to the heart of the city and bike rental.
Mazet Lavender
A rural holiday villa for 4 guests in Saint-Martin-de-Brômes. Despite being a short distance from the shopping mall, it makes up for it with a private pool and tennis court! Equipped kitchen, huge garden and attached parking.
Bergerie de charme à Moustiers
An ancient country house in a forest on a vast area with a small stream. About a kilometer from the mall. The complex includes 3 small houses (suitable for 3 families who want to be together but apart). Fully equipped kitchen and breathtaking views.
Villa Muscat
An ideal villa for a large family or several families. The villa has a swimming pool, an outdoor jacuzzi, parking, a fully equipped kitchen and a balcony facing the countryside. Pool, sun and jacuzzi - the recipe for a perfect vacation.
