The Vaux de Cernay Abbey is located in the Chevreuse Valley, about 10 minutes from Rambouillet and less than an hour from Paris. It is an ancient abbey, built in the 12th century and became one of the most prosperous monasteries in the area. During the French Revolution, the abbey was closed along with other monasteries and remained in ruins for about a hundred years. Ironically, it was the Jewish Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild (1825-1899) who saved the abbey from complete destruction and renovated it.

Today, the monastery serves as both a tourist site where you can visit the ruins of the old church and the monastery buildings, and as a romantic hotel. For the price of a room in a 3-star hotel in Paris, you can get a luxurious room and a lovely view (the hotel is on the shore of a lake and next to a lovely forest where you can walk). There is also a gourmet restaurant headed by chef Xavier Désirée, which offers a classic French menu for 60 euros per person.

In my opinion, this is without a doubt one of the most romantic hotels in France, and I highly recommend it as a base for trips to the Chevreuse Valley area or simply as a place to spend a few days of pampering.
