Mâcon sits on the right bank of the Saône, at the southern tip of Burgundy and right on the border with Beaujolais. It is the birthplace of the poet Alphonse de Lamartine, and in its center are preserved wooden houses from the 15th century, including the famous Elk House, and the Place de la Cordelia with the market. In this article, I have compiled the hotels and vacation apartments that I recommend in the city. You need to understand something about Mâcon in order to choose it correctly: it sits on the Autoroute du Soleil (A6), and therefore most of its hotels were built for those stopping for one night on the way south. Around the north and south interchanges there are dozens of functional chain hotels, and their ratings are accordingly. Those who really want to sleep in Mâcon and not just stop there will find quality in the vacation apartments in the historic center, most of which are rated nine or higher. Therefore, the list here is relatively short and divided into two: first the three hotels that I really recommend, and then the apartments. My tip: If you're heading south and just need a night, almost any hotel near the interchange will do. But if you're staying for two days and want to taste Pouilly-Fuissé and climb the Roche de Solutré, it's worth sleeping in the city rather than near the motorway, as the distance between them is not just kilometers. Macon is also a natural stopover between Dijon And between Lyon, and complements nicely the Burgundy Wine Route.

Recommended hotels in Macon

Only three hotels made the list, and that's no coincidence. Most of Macon's hotels are chain hotels near the interchanges, and they hover around a seven-something mark, which is below my threshold. These three are different: one is a modern city hotel with a rooftop bar, the other a 19th-century roadside inn in the heart of the city, and the third is a hotel restaurant across the river.

  1. HOTEL & SPA Panorama 360

    HOTEL & SPA Panorama 360

    ★★★★ $$$

The newest and most luxurious hotel in Macon, on Rue Paul Gateaud in the city center, about three kilometers from the exhibition center. The name is not a slogan: on the roof there is a bar with a terrace that overlooks all of Macon and the Saone, and it is the place to go in the city for sunset even if you are not sleeping at the hotel. The place has a spa, a gym, a common living room and private parking. The rooms are modern and relatively spacious, and some are also suitable for families. I recommend it especially for couples who want one good night on the way south and are not willing to settle for a transit hotel. Two comments from the reviews: the parking lot is narrow and uncomfortable for a large vehicle, and in a heat wave the rooms get hot.

  2. Hôtel de Bourgogne

    Hôtel de Bourgogne

    ★★★ $$

A 19th-century roadside inn, what the French call a relay de post, on rue Victor Hugo in the center of Macon, an eight-minute walk from the banks of the Seine and five minutes from the Gare de Rigollet. The building has retained its character, the rooms are relatively large for the category, and the breakfast consistently receives good marks. With nearly three thousand reviews and a score of over eight, it is the most stable hotel in the city, which is a weight I give it much more than a high score on fifty reviews. Parking is not on the hotel premises and breakfast is a separate fee, and it is an old building where not all rooms are to the same level of renovation.

  3. La Huchette Gastronomic Hotel and Restaurant

La Huchette Gastronomic Hotel and Restaurant

    ★★★ $$$

A hotel restaurant in Replonges, across the Saône and in the Havres region, about seven kilometers from the center of Macon but just minutes from the highway. It is a green mansion with a large garden, a pool, a terrace and free private parking, and its heart is a true gastronomic restaurant and not a hotel restaurant. The reviews that come back talk mainly about the food, followed by the tranquility. I recommend it to those traveling by car and are willing to exchange the historic center for a serious dinner and a garden to sit in in the morning. Note that without a car there is nothing to see here, and that the hotel is in the Annecy department and not in Saône-et-Loire, which means that technically it is no longer in Burgundy.

Recommended vacation apartments in Macon

This is where the quality of Macon lies. These four apartments are all in or within minutes of the historic center, all rated above a nine, and all have a kitchen, making them a particularly good solution in a city where the Saturday market is one of the attractions.

Apartments for a couple and a small family

  1. The corridors apartments

    The corridors apartments

Apartment in the center · $$

Several air-conditioned apartments in a historic building in the center of Macon, with original parquet floors and a private entrance for each unit. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a washing machine, iron and dryer for guests to use, which is rare in apartments of this type. There is a cafe under the building and a wine tasting cellar opposite, meaning you can go down the stairs and start your day. Isabelle, the host, gives a brief tour of the apartment on arrival and leaves instructions, which is repeated in almost every review. With nearly four hundred and fifty reviews and a score of nine and a half, this is the property with the best profile in Macon by far. Parking is not on site, and you have to use a paid public car park nearby.

  2. At Emma and Louise's

    At Emma and Louise's

    Family home $$$

An entire private house, not an apartment in a building, about two and a half kilometers from the center of Macon, with two bedrooms, a bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and a balcony overlooking the garden. The detail that every second guest mentions is the parking: it is private, inside the lot and behind a gate, and this changes the experience in Macon where street parking is a gamble. The house is small and cute rather than impressive, which is exactly what is suitable for a family who wants to unpack for three nights and go out every morning to the Beaujolais and Maconnaise wineries. The distance from the center requires a car, and for those who want to walk to restaurants in the evening, this is not the right solution.

  3. THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

    THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

    Group apartment · $$$$

A large apartment in the very center of Macon, with nine sleeping places and a jacuzzi, and it is designed from the ground up as a tribute to the wizarding world of Harry Potter. I know how it sounds, but the execution here is serious and not a cheap gimmick, and even parents who arrived without any affection for the series write in their reviews that they enjoyed it. Therefore, this is the best option in Macon for two families traveling together or for a large family with school-age children. There is a full kitchen, and at the reception they ask to coordinate the arrival time in advance. Two reservations: This is an expensive apartment relative to the city, and anyone looking for a neutral and quiet place for a couple simply will not like the concept.

Looking for more hotels and apartments in Macon?

There are many more places in Macon than I listed, simply because most of them are transit hotels that don't meet my standards. If you're just stopping overnight on the way, or the one I recommended is already booked, here are the two full lists:

And by the way, Macon is less than an hour's drive from Lyon and less than an hour and a half from Dijon, and the high-speed train from Paris reaches Macon-Loche station in less than two hours. Anyone planning a wine route in southern Burgundy can make it an excellent base for three days.

  • Best Western Plus d'Europe et d'Angleterre

Best Western Plus d'Europe et d'Angleterre

    ★★★★ $$$

Boutique hotel on the banks of the Saône River, in the center of Mâcon, in a 19th-century building completely renovated in 2013. Some rooms overlook the river directly, and all guests have easy access to the elevator. Breakfast is served as a rich buffet with local produce. The staff is highly rated, and the location is very close to the old town and the cathedral. A security deposit of 150 euros is required upon arrival and is returned at check-out. Paid private parking is only possible upon reservation.
