The difference between traveling the wine route and experiencing it fully is staying overnight in the villages or small towns that dot the route. A short tour cannot replace the warm and welcoming hospitality in the picturesque towns, staying next to the vineyards in an ancient village, or a local recommendation for tastings at a small, secret winery.
Riquewihr is one of those small towns surrounded by many villages, and surrounding it are ancient castles towering on hills that protected the wine, vineyards and wineries, as well as the wine trade that took place in the town.
Riquewihr is indeed ancient, but it is definitely modern for its guests: boutiques, restaurants, cafes and wine shops on every corner, a World War II museum with a torture chamber (!), hiking trails to castles for nature lovers, and of course the traditional Christmas market.
In my experience, Israelis who come to the region choose hotels in the big cities because of language difficulties, recommendations on websites, and fear of the unknown, but I think it's worth daring and staying in the villages, I promise - it's a lovely experience.
Where to stay in Riquier?
The town offers 3-star hotels, many apartments for rent, cabins and cottages of various sizes and prices. In the article I also included houses for rent outside of Briquevir because the supply there is limited, and I skimmed over to the neighboring villages.
I'm sure at least one of these accommodations will suit you perfectly and will be a great base for your trip toThe Alsace Wine Route.
