Many years ago in Riboville, a poor young man was walking around the town, weeping bitterly. One of the rich men of the town met him and asked the reason for his weeping. The young man said that the flute, from which he made a living, had broken. The nobleman did not hesitate, gave him a purse with silver coins and continued on his way.

As a token of gratitude, that very evening, all the drummers, flute players, and violinists went up to the nobleman's castle, playing all the way as a token of appreciation. Since then, every year the town holds a medieval festival with costumes and musical instruments.

Ribeauvillé has existed since the 8th century and is located at the foot of the Vosges Mountains. It is surrounded by ancient castles, vineyards and picturesque villages that complete the charm. You will find cobblestone sidewalks, narrow streets and colorful houses, but also modern, luxurious, spa centers, a casino and local wines.

All of this makes Ribouville a great base for stargazing in the Alsace region.

Where to stay in Riboviglia?

The town is small, so the list below also covers nearby villages on the Wine Route. I’ve arranged it from luxurious to affordable, and for each ticket you’ll find the advantages, one real disadvantage, and what you should ask for in advance. Clicking “More Information” opens the details.

Luxurious hotels and apartments in Riboviglia

  1. Hotel Barrière Ribeauville

    Hotel Barrière Ribeauville

    ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
    8.5 $$$$$

Indulgence to the fullest. A hotel that offers you comfortable rooms with a view of the vineyards, a restaurant, a bar and a wine cellar, but that's just the beginning. The hotel has a huge spa with 3 pools, a sauna, a hammam, a jacuzzi, hydrotherapy, massage and various beauty treatments. There is also a casino next to the hotel, making it the only place in the area where the evening doesn't end at ten. However, the restaurant sometimes works with a fixed menu without a choice, which is surprising at such a price level. I recommend finding out in advance what exactly is included in the package you are booking.

  2. Gate of the Maidens

    Gate of the Maidens

    ★ ★ ★ ★
    $ $ $

The cottage (Porte des Pucelles) is located right in the heart of the town, next to the local market, restaurants, cafes and wine shops. In the 18th century building you will find 4 bedrooms, a living room, a dining area, a large and well-equipped kitchen and even a pool table. The name refers to one of the ancient city gates of Ribeauvillé, and you are essentially sleeping inside the town's history. The house is suitable for eight guests. However, in such a historic building there are stairs and no elevator. I recommend it for two families traveling together, and less so for those who have difficulty climbing stairs.

Recommended hotels in Riboviglia itself

  1. Hotel SPA Restaurant Au Cheval Blanc

Hotel SPA Restaurant Au Cheval Blanc

    ★★★
    8.1 $$

The hotel is located in the heart of the town in an old and colorful building and inside it is a restaurant with real Alsatian food that is the pride of the hotel. The hotel offers spacious rooms, a charming terrace and a spa that includes a jacuzzi, sauna and massage and beauty treatments upon reservation. It is located at 122 Grand'Rue, and there is free parking and a garage where you can leave your bicycles. However, the sauna must be booked about fifteen minutes in advance so that it has time to warm up, and the level of service is not uniform. I recommend asking for a renovated room, because there is a significant difference between the old and new rooms.

  2. Logis Hotel de la Tour

    Logis Hotel de la Tour

    ★★★
    $$

A small, family-run hotel in the heart of the historic district, on Rue de la Mairie, right opposite the Tour des Bouchers. The building was once a winery, and some of the rooms retain the original Alsatian construction details. The hotel offers a fully equipped spa for guests, a huge jacuzzi, hammam, pool, Finnish sauna and massages on request, as well as bike rental and a tennis court. However, private parking is available for a daily fee and some of the rooms are relatively dark. I recommend asking for a room with a window to the street, and taking advantage of the hotel's discount on golf courses in the area.

  3. Logis Hôtel-Restaurant du Mouton

    Logis Hôtel-Restaurant du Mouton

    ★★
    8.7 $$

A charming family hotel in the heart of town with a restaurant specializing in local food. Each room is decorated in a different style but all are luxurious. One romantic suite hides a pampering jacuzzi inside. It sits on a quiet square in the center, and the breakfast here receives exceptional praise: a selection of breads, cold cuts and cheeses and good coffee. There is also a serious wine cellar in the restaurant. However, there is no parking at the hotel, and you have to look for a place in the nearby streets or in a public lot. I recommend arriving relatively early in the season, and booking a table in the restaurant because it closes on the staff's day off.

  4. Logis Hotel Le Ménestrel

    Logis Hotel Le Ménestrel

    ★★★
    $$

A convenient hotel near the road leading to the town, on Avenue du Général de Gaulle. The hotel offers 29 air-conditioned rooms, breakfast and a spa with a jacuzzi, hammam and sauna, as well as a tennis court and free parking. A big advantage is the diverse view in all directions, and also the fact that you can park without a fight, which is not obvious in Ribeauvillé in the season. However, it is about a fifteen-minute walk from the historic center and not in it. I recommend it to those arriving by car and prefer parking and quiet over going straight into the alleys.

Cottages and apartments in Riboviglia and nearby villages

  1. The Moulin Gîte

    The Moulin Gîte

    ★★★
    $$

A comfortable, spacious and comfortably furnished cottage in a green setting right on the edge of the mountain opposite St. Ulric's Castle. The cottage has two bedrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen and a garden with a barbecue surrounded by trees and vineyards. The name refers to the old flour mill that stood here, and the stream that powered it still flows nearby. It is a place to sleep in complete peace after a day of wandering the alleys. However, it is far from the town center and there are no restaurants around. I recommend shopping at the Riboviglia market on the way in, and planning to use the barbecue.

  2. The Blue House

    The Blue House

    ★★★
    $$

The house is really blue!! An old country house in Kientzheim, a small village on the way to Kaysersberg. It has two bedrooms suitable for 6 guests, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining area. From the window of the house and the garden you can look out over the vineyards. The village itself is surrounded by a medieval wall and has old wineries, most notably Paul Blanc. However, Kientzheim is about nine kilometers from Ribeauvillé, and there are almost no restaurants open in the evening. I recommend it to those who plan to base their trip on a car and not on the town itself.

  3. The Maison Jaune

    The Maison Jaune

    ★★★
    $$

Three charming apartments in the yellow house in Ammerschwihr. The apartments are suitable for an extended family or friends who want to stay together and find a safe space for children to play. The village sits between Kaysersberg and Colmar, with old wineries and vineyard walks that start from the village itself. The real advantage here is the ability to disperse a large group without having to give up a shared dinner. However, Ammerschwihr is about thirteen kilometers away from Ribeauvillé. I recommend it as a base for the entire wine road area, not as a place to stay for Ribeauvillé alone.

  4. Gîtes Les Coccinelles

    Gîtes Les Coccinelles

    ★★★
    $$

Accommodation units in a modern wooden design inspired by beetles. Each “beetle” is located in a private area with a garden. The complex is ideal for children and includes bicycles for guests to use. The idea of separate units within a common area works well for families with children of different ages, because everyone gets their own space and in the evenings they gather outside. However, this is a rural complex and not in the heart of town, and you will need a car for every outing. I recommend it especially in the summer, when the gardens and bicycles really come into their own, and less so in the winter.

  5. The Log Cabin

    The Log Cabin

    ★★
    $$

A charming little wooden house in a green space in Belfosse. The house offers 2 bedrooms and a kitchen. Ideal for families who want to spend a vacation in nature in comfortable conditions, surrounded by horses and cows. The name refers to the traditional logging wagon, and this is exactly the type of accommodation that children remember years later. However, the place is in the Vosges Mountains and not in the vineyard area, that is, far from Ribeauvillé and the wine route. I recommend it as a stop for a day or two in combination with the Vosges Mountains and not as a base for touring the wine villages, and to check in advance what is open in the area.
